‘Tis the season for ugly sweaters
‘Tis the season for ugly sweaters

When you visit Downtown Portland this holiday season, you’ll find more than twinkle lights and window displays making spirits bright — some of the city’s most iconic statues will be yarn bombed with their own festive knit apparel, while the #uglysweaterPDX photo contest will seek out Portland’s ugliest holiday sweater.

Enjoy the scene, snap your own photos and stock up on stylish sweaters, hats, scarves and other gifts at the many major national retailers and chic local boutiques downtown.

Statue yarn bombing will begin with the iconic “Allow Me” statue in Pioneer Courthouse Square on Nov. 14 and continue through Dec. 7; the #uglysweaterPDX contest will run on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Dec. 2 through Dec. 20 — National Ugly Sweater Day — with weekly themes as well as a grand prize contest. Wine Country Thanksgiving
Wine Country Thanksgiving tasting at Ken Wright Cellars

Adding to the list of all that Portland-area visitors and residents have to be grateful for is the annual Wine Country Thanksgiving, held each year on the three days following Thanksgiving.

During Oregon’s premier tasting and cellar-stocking event, more than 160 wineries open their doors to the public, offering samples of favorite labels and special vintages.

The holiday weekend festivities include live music, food and wine pairings, and the opportunity to visit with winemakers at some of Oregon’s top wineries — including many not usually open to the public.

Through Jan. 5
The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes
This footprint maker is used to solve the new mystery within the exhibition.

Exploring the revolutionary investigative secrets of the world’s most famous detective, the International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) gives visitors a unique look inside the mind of this leading-edge fictional scientist.

Highlights include hands-on opportunities to learn about forensic practices of the 1890s that are still relevant today and a chance for visitors to solve the newest Sherlock Holmes mystery, written exclusively for the exhibit. An original manuscript, investigative tools used by Holmes and period artifacts will also be on display.

Tickets are available now and are included for visitors who book the Elementary, My Dear overnight package at downtown Portland’s Governor Hotel. The package includes mystery-themed amenities as well as an authentic deerstalker hat, just like the one Holmes himself famously wears.

Portland’s Holiday Ale Fest
Drink in the holiday cheer at the Holiday Ale Fest.

Downtown Portland’s annual Holiday Ale Festival (Dec. 4-8, 2013), a celebration of winter suds set beneath the region’s largest decorated Christmas tree, features big, bold beers designed to keep revelers warm on cold winter nights.

The event also includes delicious, holiday-themed foods, live music and a Sunday brunch with exclusive beers alongside European pastries, cured meats and artisan cheeses. Wear some Santa pants, because you’re going to need a bigger waistline.
